Our Mission

As the most popular performing belly dance group in Singapore, with growing demands from our audience, we have since started to run our own belly dance classes and saxophone lessons in our Desert Roses Studio @ 22b Upper Cross Street. Our aim is to bring belly dance to all ladies and let's benefit fitness, confidence and fun from this form of art together. Let's enjoy the music and dance together and create a healthy and exciting lifestyle together! Meantime we are also ready to bring our excellent students onto stage and let them shine in the spotlight.

 

 

Our Strength

The most popular and professional belly dance performing group in Singapore with established belly dancers and musicians. Our dancers (dance and music) have been featured on Mediacorp TV channel 5 in 2010, Desert Roses won the top 6 best arts entertainers group in Singapore with entertainers of other arts forms in the talents TV show "One Moment of Glory".

 

We have performed in various venues in Singapore for entertainment shows in grand ceremonies and educational programs (NAC- AEP programs) over the years.

In 2002, Lily first saw belly dancing by a friend and enchanted by the form of art. She started to learn it and started in 2004, Lily was already the regular belly dancer for the musicians of Al-Bedouin Middle Eastern Music Ensemble Singapore. Lily and the Drummers of the Nile (Al-Bedouin's student group) are regular fixtures of the Holistic Living Festival, having performed together for the last three Festivals. Lily has also performed for numorous events include Mercure Roxy Park Hotel Appreciation Night, NUS Prince George's Park International Festival, Light Up Bishan, Toastmasters International Anniversary Dinner, Kampung Senang World Harmony Day Celebration, Embedded Systems Conference, (Faculty of Engineering, NUS), NUS Centennial Celebration, Toastmasters Christmas Party, Little India Utsav, Dance Connection Christmas Party, and performed on her own for the Nanyang Technological University Alumni Day.

 

Lily also joined Al-Bedouin drummers and other dancers in the Vida Condominium television commercial.

 

Lily has also performed as a middle eastern percussionist; she assisted conducting teambuilding workshops for such companies as IBM, OCBC as well as for 500 students at Nanyang Primary School, and performed as a drummer at the Pulses of the Northeast Festival in July 2004.

 

Lily has also performed as a salsa dancer at events such as the Junior Chamber International Operation hope Fundraiser, NUS Prince George's Park International Festival and Citigroup Latin Fiesta. She has also assisted teaching Salsa in GSS-NUS and in Philips, as well as some other private parties. She also taught Belly Dance/Salsa in NUS Prince Georges Park-international students hostel during 2005- 2006.

 

Lily has been on these mediacorp TV programs: "Focus", "It's a small world", "Good morning Singapore", "综艺Go live" "Hooked on Hanyu" and appeared on many newspapers and magazines as well.

 

Educational Background:

Dance training (2002- 2006): Lily began her belly dance training in Singapore under established dancers Claribel Ng, Fiona Hoo (Desert Rhythm) and Belinda Tan (Sahara Sundance) and also received private training in Istanbul from internationally acclaimed dancer Hale Cakir (Hale Sultan).

Sophia

(Performer/Instructor/Art director/ Choreographer)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sophia is a trained folk dancer since young. She graduated with a dance degree in China, worked as a fulltime dance instructor and yoga instructor in China during college.

 

She has been performing Middle Eastern dance since 2005 after training in China from local teachers as well as workshops with Dina and other Egyptian masters.

 

She is currently the Art Director and Core instructor of Desert Roses Belly Dance where she both leads the performance troupe as well as trains students. She is also currently teaching several Middle Eastern courses at the National University of Singapore.

 

In 2009, Sophia performed in several AEP programmes and countless other company function performances outside of schools, highlights include F1 Singapore 2009.

 

She is very young and talented, extremely good at stage performance, has wowed audiance with her graceful moves and extreme flexibity. Her love for dance will inspire her students to explore more in belly dance with her.

 

 

Susan

(Performer/Instructor/Choreographer)

 

 

 

 

 

 

Susan's stage experience started from 3 when she was a little girl. She was always the lead dancer in the performance group all the time during her school time. She received professional Chinese Dance Training during her secondary school and college. She was the representive dancer for the school and has won many awards in many competitions at province level and national level.

 

She has won 'the top 10 best new dancers in Jiangsu Province' award, a TV programme hosted by CCTV in 1999 during her work as the director of the ARTS department for FOXCONN Shanghai. She discovered belly dance as her new passion in 2006 when she built her home in Singapore and furthered her study in belly dance ever since under different masters and went through intensive professional trainings.

 

She is a popular belly dance instructor in many community clubs in Singapore and she also taught belly dance in big companies such as UMC. and also the main instructor in Desert Roses Belly Dance Studio. Her class in our studio is more intensive, progressive and flexible(smaller class, also with makeup sessions).

 

She has performed in many big events in Singapore and also with Desert Roses Belly Dance in Singapore F1 2009 and involved in AEP program. Her dance is graceful and her moves are precise, she is great at drum solo dance and as well as Chinese Fan Fusion Belly Dance.

 

She is extremely patient and friendly to students and very clear in explanation of the movements and routines. Have fun dancing with instructor Susan and improve your techniques with no time!

 

Jessy

(Performer/Instructor/Choreographer)

 

 

 

 

With the passion for dance since young, Jessy also has received professional dance training since young. She was Member of Chongqing Province Rhythmic Gymnastics Team from 9 to 15, and graduated from China Dance and Music Art School specializing in Chinese ethnic dance in 2001. From 2003 to 2008, she studied ballet dance, morden dance, and Chinese ethnic dance in the famous NAFA (Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts) in Singapore and graduated with the diploma.

Besides her strong qualification in dance, she has also performed dancing in numerous events since young. The highlights include her participation in CCTV (Chinese Central TV station) Chinese New Year Celebration program in 2001 and 2002; her performance in dans Festival held at Esplanade Singapore in 2006 and 2007. ?She represented NAFA in Dance Exchange Programme held in Bangkok, Thailand in 2006.

Her awards include third place for Chongqing Province Beauty Pageant Competition, “San Mei” Beauty Pageant; gold medal for Team Rhythmic Gymnastics event and won bronze medal for Individual Rhythmic Gymnastics event in 1997.

She is also a very experienced dance teacher, since 1997 she has been teaching dance and undertaking choreographers’ role for different organizations.

In 2009 she started to work with Desert Roses Belly Dance Studio and fell in love with belly dance since then. She quickly mastered the techniques with her strong dance background and started to perform belly dance and teach belly dance since then. She is precise in her movements and elegant and graceful in her style. She is the main member of Desert Roses Belly Dance performance group and also main instructor in Desert Roses Belly Dance Studio. She is not only an experienced instructor but also a friendly instructor who always cares about students’ progress and enjoyment in belly dance. She inspires her students to pursue the true joy, grace and beauty in belly dance.
